Diplomático, directo y amable, casi crees que en realidad conversas con el Professor (qué más diera yo). En exclusiva les traigo mi entrevista con este escritor que sube como la espuma en los rankings de los libros más vendidos. Sylvain ya es superventas en el New York Times y USA Today. Las dos primeras partes de la serie están disponibles en español. 1. Antes de referirnos a tus libros, queremos saber desde la
mismísima fuente de información ¿Cómo describirías en 5 palabras al misterioso
hombre canadiense detrás del pseudónimo de Sylvain Reynard?
SR: Esa es una muy buena pregunta…
2. Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu travesía como escritor para
lograr ser publicado.
SR: En un principio publiqué con una editorial norteamericana
pequeña, luego lo hice con Berkley/Penguin. Mi tercera novela, “La redención de
Gabriel”, será publicada por Berkley el 3 de diciembre. Planeta – España, ha
comprado los derechos en español de la novela, pero aún no tiene una fecha de
lanzamiento. De todos modos, ellos han publicado ya los dos primeros libros de
la serie: “El infierno de Gabriel”, y “El éxtasis de Gabriel”.
3. Mi primera sorpresa fue el tema de la trilogía, el cual gira
en torno al encuentro y la relación entre el Profesor Gabriel Emerson, y
Julianne Mitchell, tus protagonistas. ¿Por qué elegiste la “Divina Comedia”
como una conexión entre la pareja, que a la vez es también la esencia de toda
la historia? ¿Pensaste en alguna ocasión hacerlo pudo ser una apuesta arriesgada?
SR: La primera vez que
visualicé la historia, aún no era un novelista. “El infierno de Gabriel”, fue
mi primera novela, así que no tuve ninguna expectativa de que alguien pudiera
leer mi trabajo, por no hablar de su publicación.
Admiro muchísimo el trabajo de Dante,
y pensé que podría ser una buena idea presentar la historia de Dante y Beatrice
a una audiencia más amplia y moderna.
4. El Profesor es un
alma muy atormentada, quizá incapaz de creerse realmente digno de conservar el
amor de una persona, debido a su pasado. Creo que es uno de los personajes más
atormentados que haya leído en un romance contemporáneo de literatura. ¿Cómo
empezaste a bosquejar los detalles sobre Gabriel Emerson, y qué te inspiró a
hacerlo?
SR: El Profesor es un
ejemplo de muchos de los Siete Pecados Capitales: Lujuria, Ira, Orgullo,
Avaricia, y Envidia. Una vez que imaginas una persona como esa, pero le otorgas
conciencia y un deseo de dejar sus pecados atrás, tienes la tensión para un
personaje interesante.
5. Julianne Mitchel podría percibirse como pasiva y receptiva a
casi todas las demandas de Gabriel. Podemos entender su pasado, pero… ¿Es ella
el reflejo de lo que una compañera perfecta debería ser de acuerdo con tus
parámetros? Si, o no, y por qué.
SR: Yo no veo a Julianne en la manera que la describes. Ella es
gentil y tímida, pero no la veo como pasiva. En la escena en que ella es
confrontada por Christa Peterson en Starbucks, por ejemplo, Julia elige no
tener una reacción. Ella no es pasiva, ella es una pacifista. Pero pacifismo no
es pasividad. Creo que existen diferencias importantes entre ambas. Y si lees
el capítulo en el cual ella discute con el Profesor
durante el seminario de Dante, verás que ella en esta ocasión ella abandona
sus tendencias pacifistas.

Conozco (no, no soy asediadora – risas -), que te gustan
mucho los rusos: Gogol, Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoi. Ellos solían ser muy
trágica, inclusive profundos y oscuros en sus historias, con crítica social y
personajes femeninos más o menos envueltas por un entorno de hombres
dominantes…y aún si no puedo compararlos con la “Divina Comedia” de Dante, me
pregunto: ¿Cuántos aspectos de esa influencia literaria podemos encontrar en
tus matices de escritura?
SR: Estoy claramente influenciado por los autores y trabajos
que admire. Soy aficionado de los escritores rusos que mencionas. Uno de los
temas interesantes que esos autores exploran es esto del sufrimiento y la
redención, y ciertamente aquellos temas los exploro en mi propia escritura.
- Nombre 3 escritores (no rusos), que admires del siglo XIX de la literatura británica, y cómo impactaron tu forma de pensar y luego tu visión como autor.
SR: Thomas Hardy
influenció mi escritura, pero de un modo negativo. No encuentro estas historias
particularmente redentoras. Así que de preguntarme a mí mismo: “¿Qué hubiera
escritor Hardy?” con respecto a una novela, probablemente escribiría lo
opuesto.

De todas maneras, también estoy
influenciado por CS Lewis y JRR Tolkien. Ambos novelistas del siglo XX, nacidos
en el siglo XIX. Sé que me estoy explayando un poquito al citarlos a ambos.
- ¿Cuánto tiempo te toma terminar un libro?
SR: Eso depende del libro, pero como mínimo algunos meses. Me veo
incapaz de escribir libros cortos.
- Pareces
una persona muy sensible y artística a través de tu literatura. Cuéntanos
por favor: ¿Cómo es tu proceso de recolección de información para
documentarte lo suficiente para poder escribir tus libros?
SR: Dedico mucho tiempo en la investigación de diversos ámbitos. Es
muy agradable.
- Descríbenos un día en la rutina de escritor de Sylvain.
SR: Escribo en un
escritorio con una laptop, rodeado de libros y archivos de investigación.
Además coloco piezas de obras de arte en mi escritorio y copias de pinturas,
así puedo observarlas, mientras escribo.
- Dijiste una vez que existe una parte de ti en tus personjas. ¿Cuáles son las partes buenas y malas, más importantes, de Gabriel que también le pertenecen a la esencia de Sylvain Reynard?
SR: Me temo que resulta
casi imposible hablar sobre una de mis propias virtudes sin sonar pretencioso. Y por vicios… bueno, existen muchos.
- Solo existen pocos escritores que escriban romance erótico contemporáneo. Fue realmente refrescante para mí leer tus novelas. En las escenas de sexo pude percibir una prosa atrevida, inclusive tierna, genuina, apasionada y generosa. Además hay humor, diálogos brillantes y, por supuesto, algunas lecciones sobre “La Divina Comedia”. Ahora el 1ero y 2do libro están disponibles en español, y el 3er se lanzará en diciembre de este año. ¿Cuáles son tus próximos proyectos?
SR: Gracias por tus
amables palabras sobre mis novelas. Debería mencionar que Planeta-España, mi
editorial español, ha comprado los derechos para “La redención de Gabriel” en
español. Y no tengo aún los datos del lanzamiento, pero ellos deberían estar
anunciando algo en su página web.

SR: Gracias por preguntarme al respecto. Con mi plataforma pública
como escritor, he tratado de atraer la atención sobre diversas organizaciones
benéficas y organizaciones con el fin de ayudar a estos grupos en el trabajo
que están haciendo. Por ejemplo, apoyo Covenant House, que proporciona un lugar seguro para los

So mysterious and secretive as the same Professor Gabriel Emerson, the hero of his famous trilogy, is the talented writer behind this series that is pure seduction and smartness. Sylvain is diplomatic, direct and friendly, in that level that you almost think you are chatting with the Professor (I really wish that!). I bring to all of you my exclusive interview with this amazing author whose books are bestsellers of the New York Times and USA Today. The first two parts of the Gabriel´s series are available in Spanish. His latest book, and 3rd part, "Gabriel's Redemption" will be released in December this year. 1. Before we speak about your books, let us know from the
key source: How do you describe in just five words the mysterious Canadian man
behind the Sylvain Reynard pseudonym?
SR: That’s a very
good question…
2. Tell us
about your author’s journey to being published.
SR: I published
with a small American press initially, then moved to Berkley/Penguin. My
third novel, “Gabriel’s Redemption,” will be published by Berkley on December 3rd.
Planeta Espana has bought the Spanish language rights to that novel, but I
don’t have a release date from them yet. However, they have already published
the first two books in the series; “El Inferno de Gabriel” and “El
Extasis de Gabriel.”
3. The first
surprising issue for me was the theme of this trilogy, which surrounds the
encounter and relationship between Professor Gabriel Emerson and Julianne
Mitchell, your principal characters. Why did you choose the Divine Comedy as a
connection between the couple and also as the essence of the whole story? Did
you ever think it was a risky move?
SR: When I first
envisioned the story, I was not a novelist. “Gabriel’s Inferno” was my first
novel. So I didn’t have any expectation that anyone would read my work, let
alone publish it.
I admire
Dante’s works very much and thought that it would be good to introduce the
story of Dante and Beatrice to a wider, modern audience.
4. The Professor
is a very tormented soul, maybe incapable of really believing he could keep
someone’s love despite of his past. I think he is one of the most tormented
characters I’ve ever seen in contemporary romance literature. How did you start
outlining the details about Gabriel Emerson, and what inspired you to do so?
SR: The Professor
is an exemplar of several of the Seven Deadly Sins: Lust, Wrath, Pride,
Avarice, and Envy. Once you imagine someone like that but you give him a
conscience and a desire to leave his sins behind, you have the necessary
tension for an interesting character.
5. Julianne Mitchell could be perceived as passive and
receptive to almost all Gabriel’s demands. We can understand her past, but… Is
she a reflection of what a perfect female partner should be according with your
parameters? Yes/no, Why?
SR: I don’t see
Julianne in the way you’ve described. She’s gentle and she’s shy, but I
don’t see her as passive. In the scene when she’s confronted by Christa
Peterson in Starbucks, for example, Julia elects not to take action. She isn’t
passive – she’s a pacifist. But pacifism isn’t passivity. I think there are
important differences between the two. And if you read the chapter in
which she argues with the Professor during his Dante seminar, you’ll see that
she abandons her pacifist tendencies on occasion.
6. I know (No, I’m not a stalker – laughs-) that you like
Russians: Gogol, Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy. They used to be very tragic,
even deep and dark in their stories, with criticism to the society and female
characters were more or less surrounded by dominating men… and even if I can’t
compare with Dante’s Divine Comedy, I still wonder: How many aspects of that
literature influence we can find in your writing angles?
SR: Clearly, I’m
influenced by the authors and works I admire. I’m fond of the Russian
writers you mention. One of the interesting themes that those writers explore
is that of suffering and redemption and certainly those are themes I explore in
my own writing.
7. Name 3 writers (no Russians), that you admire from the
nineteenth century British literature, and how did they impact your thoughts
and then your vision as an author?
SR: Thomas Hardy
influences my writing, but in a negative way. I don’t find his stories
particularly redemptive. So if I were to ask myself “What would Hardy write?”
with respect to a novel, I’d probably write the opposite. Here is a

I am,
however, also influenced by CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien. They are both 20th
century novelists, born in the 19th century. So I know I’m
stretching it a little by citing them.
8. How long it takes you to finish a book?
SR: It depends on
the book but minimally several months. I seem incapable of writing short books.
9. You seem to be a very sensitive and artistic person
through your literature. Tell us please: What is your process to collect
information to be documented enough to write your books?
SR: I spend a lot of time doing
research in various settings. It’s enjoyable.
10. Describe us
one day in Sylvain’s writing routine.
SR: I write at a
desk on a laptop, surrounded by books and files of research. I also place
pieces of artwork on my desk and copies of painting so that I can look at them
while I write.
11. You said
once that there’s a part of you in your characters. Which are the main good and
bad parts of Gabriel that also belong to Sylvain Reynard’s essence?
SR: I’m afraid
it’s almost impossible to talk about one’s own goodness without sounding proud.
As for vices – well, they are many.
12. There are
just few male authors that write contemporary erotic romance. It was really
refreshing for me to read your novels. In the sexual scenes I can perceive
daring writing, even tender, genuine, passion and generosity. There’s also
humor, smart dialogue and of course some lessons about Divine Comedy. Now the 1st and 2nd book
are available in Spanish and the 3rd one will be released in
December of this year. Which are your next projects?
SR: Thank you for
your kind words about my novels. I should mention that Planeta Espana, my
Spanish publisher, has purchased the right to publish “Gabriel’s Redemption” in
Spanish. I don’t have details about their release date yet but they should be
announcing something on their website.

SR: Thank you for
asking me about this. With my public platform as a writer, I’ve tried to draw
attention to various charities and organizations in order to help those groups
in the work that they are doing. For example, I support Covenant House,
which provides a safe place for homeless youth and I also support WorldVision,
who work with impoverished children around the world.
